Where is Creme Fraiche in Grocery Store?

In recent times, crème fraiche has been gaining popularity in the US as a better alternative to mayonnaise and other dishes that needs a dip or spread to be complete. However, a lot of people who want to try it out don’t know where to look in grocery stores.

If you’re one of such grocery shoppers looking for when to get some crème fraiche, don’t worry we’ll be helping you out in this article. Apart from telling you the aisle and section to look for it in grocery stores, we’ve also highlighted some grocery stores known to sell it, and the aisle they keep it as well.

In addition, we’ve discussed its shelf life and an ideal storage method so you know how to enjoy optimal freshness.

What Aisle is Crème Fraiche in Grocery Stores?

You’ll always find crème fraiche in the section for dairy products (dairy section), next to other creamy items like heavy cream, sour cream, and fresh milk. Although this is the standard aisle to search for it, some local grocery stores will place it in the deli section alongside gourmet cheeses.

Also, some stores that have sections dedicated to European cheeses may stock it here. If any of these places don’t have it, then the grocery store most likely does not sell it. Nevertheless, don’t hesitate to ask a store attendant just to make sure.

Where to find Crème Fraiche near You?

1. Amazon Fresh

At Amazon walk-in stores you’ll find crème fraiche in the dairy section, in the aisle for milks & creams. Here is one of the nicest spots to get a variety of brands to choose from. They’ve got products from brands like Organic Valley, Happy Belly, and 365 by Whole Foods Market.

2. Walmart

Walmart keeps crème fraiche in the dairy & eggs section, and the aisle for sour cream & chilled dips. While that’s the case, they also keep some of their crème fraiche products in their cream & creamers aisle – also in their section for dairy & eggs. They’ve got products from brands like Cultures for Health, Cacique, Daisy Pure, Great Value, and lots more.

3. Kroger

You’ll find crème fraiche in the dairy & eggs aisle in Kroger stores. The three brands you’re likely to see are Vermont Creamery, Bellwether Farms, and Cultures for Health.

4. Safeway

Safeway stores are surefire spots to get crème fraiche – they stock it in their aisle for milk & cream. The only downside is that there are usually only two brands available – Bellwether Farms and Vermont Creamery.

5. Wegmans

You’ll find crème fraiche in either the dairy aisle or cheese shop of Wegmans stores. The downside to picking this option for shopping is that they only stock one product; the Vermont Creamery Crème Fraiche, French-Style Cultured Cream.

6. Stop & Shop

If you’ve got a stop&shop spot nearby, you’ll want to look through their aisle for milk and cream to find crème fraiche. Just like Wegmans they only sell Vermont Creamery Crème Fraiche – not a great spot if you want to buy different brands to try out.

7. Price Chopper

At Price Chopper stores, you’ll find most of their crème fraiche in the deli section. They’ve got products from brands like Vermont Creamery, BelGioioso, and Alouette.

How Long Does Crème Fraiche Last?

While unopened, store-bought crème fraiche can last up to the date written in the container. However, opened crème fraiche should be completely consumed within 5 days while being stored in a refrigerator.

Although some users claim it can be used for up to 10 days provided it is being constantly refrigerated, you want to maintain the low end of 5 to ensure you’re only using it in optimal conditions. While that’s the case, if you notice a separation between the liquid and crème, you can stir it to get it back in usable form.

However, if there’s a change in coloring or you notice any mold forms on its surface, you should discard it immediately.

What Can You Use In Place of Crème Fraiche?

In case you cannot find crème fraiche in your grocery store, here are some alternatives you can fall back on:

  • Homemade crème fraiche which is a mix of buttermilk and heavy cream
  • Full-fat Greek yogurt
  • Sour cream
  • Mexican crema
  • Cream cheese

And there you have it: where to find Creme Fraiche in the grocery store.
