CHAPTER 53

“I want to go and visit my parents. You’ve never gone to see them will you come along with me to greet them? ” Onyabehi asked Ogwuche, Igoche was tied to her back, with a white knitted baby wrapper.

“No I won’t be going. I’ve to go and work at Papa Peter Farm, take this money.” Ogwuche put his hands in his pocket and brought ten pieces of one thousand naira notes. “Buy bread for your mother and greet her for me.” Ogwuche said.

“But Ogwuche it would have been nice if we went together…” She insisted.

“I said no! I’m not going anywhere, if you can’t go alone leave it! ” He said, he carried his cutlass on his right hand and threw the hoe over his shoulder.

“I have to go and work.” He said, as he walked away. Onyabehi had stayed one year and three months without seeing her mother, she missed her so much, her father had been coming around, not to see her though. Just to follow Ogar about like an apprentice.

She got a motorcycle, it was a two hours drive from Ogwuche’s village to hers. She stopped at the junction of her village, she went to a shop owned by an Igbo trader, where she bought toiletries and toothpaste with two loafs of bread.

She arrived home at about two P. M, her siblings were overjoyed to have her around.

“Onya!” She heard the familiar voice of her best friend blessing. The news had spread across the whole village that Onyabehi was back, her best friend abandoned what she was cooking to her mother as she ran to see her best fei3nd, with whom she had attended primary and secondary school.

“Oh my sweetheart I missed you so. It’s been like four months now.” Blessing had come to Agadagba to check on her when she put to birth. “Give me Igoche.” She said taking the baby from Onyabehi.

“He’s growing so fast.” Blessing said carrying the baby. “How do you carry him? he’s so heavy how do you cope without your back breaking? ” The fair lady asked her friend .

“Funny question, can he be heavier than the basin of water we used to carry from the stream to the house? ” Onyabehi asked.

“This your son is so heavy oh, come and carry him before he breaks my back .” She said giggling. Just then Onyabehi’s siblings were returning back from the stream, the basin almost fell from their head.

They had not been allowed to go and visit their sister, since she was taken to doctor for marriage. They almost threw their basins of water in excitement.

“Calm down don’t throw your water away, I’m here. ” Onyabehi said to her brother who barely poured the water in his basin into a blue plastic drum, before running into Onyabehi’s embrace, her other siblings followed suit. They couldn’t help the happy tears pouring from their eyes.

“We missed you so much.” Glory said still crying.

“Haba why are you crying? I didn’t not die. I was only given out in marriage.” She said to them. A dirty looking yong lad ran up to Blessing.

“Blessing mama said I should tell you to come back home now now and go and finish that food you’re cooking! ” The naughty champ said. A sharp knock from his elder sister put him in check.

“Can’t you greet, don’t you know my friend Onya ? or when last did you see her? ” She asked her brother.

“Leave me alone oh! is that why you’re knocking me ? if I don’t report you to papa let me die! I think papa told you not to beat me again? ” He asked letting the hot tears roll down his eyes.

“Oko wait for me. I’ve something to give you.” Onyabehi said before entering the house. her siblings were all over the things she had brought back. “Marvelous you people should scattering my bag , I’ll give you what I bought for you later.”

She said, she had saved some money from her yam business, she had joined Ene to support her husband. She got a pack of biscuits and a polo shirt for Oko. When the boy saw the gift, his angry face lightened up.

“Thank you aunt Comfort.” He said to Onyabehi with a teary red eyes , he continued staring at his elder sister with hate, as he walked away.

“Blessing you shouldn’t have knocked his head na, it’s not fair, your mother sent him, and he delivered the message.” Onyabehi said.

“Did my mother tell him not to greet his elders? that knock will teach him a lesson, come and take Igoche let me rush home, before my mother will find me here to come and give me my own.” She said while laughing.

“Hold on for a bit. Glory! Glory! ” Her younger sister Glory didn’t respond. ”Godwin? ” She called Godwin replied at once. “please bring one of the bread and the big sachet of Omo for Blessing!” Godwin came along with the bread , Onyabehi took it from him and escorted her friend home.

“How is your doctor husband na!” Blessing asked.
“Abeg don’t tease me, is he a doctor? Doctor that goes from farm to farm to do menial jobs. I don’t know what’s wrong with him, he’s turned himself to his father’s slave.

He would be in his farm from morning to night farming , any day he’s not there he would be in people’s farm to work and get paid penny.” Onyabehi said angrily.

“Hmmm when I was hearing that you got married to a medical doctor, even without the traditional right, I was among the ladies who were jealous and envious of you oh.

But wait oh Comfort are you sure he’s even a doctor? ” Blessing stopped on her path and turned to make face contact with Onyabehi.

“Well yeah he’s a doctor, he was working in Gboko, I heard his father locked him up in the house for days, until he got sacked at work.” Onyabehi said.

“I feel sorry for him oh. Do you love him? ” She asked her friend as they continued through the bushy path that led to Blessing’s family house. Onyabehi hesitated for a long while.

“You know who I love… I’ve been trying to love him, it’s not easy he doesn’t love me, whenever we make love together , no passion, no zeal, he just does it like a-like a job, no passion whatsoever.

The most annoying part is that he doesn’t make a move at all towards me, I’ll always be the one to make the move. If I don’t we can even go months without sex.” Onyabehi said with a sad look on her face.
