THE NIGHT WIFE

CHAPTER 8

Then he dumped himself on his eight by eight bed and began to snore . His heart leapt for joy ,that night he dreamt of himself , knelt down and taking off Dooshima’s Shoes on their wedding day , her white sparkling as she spread her beautiful lips to laugh , she embraced him , he kissed her lips softly ,as soon as their bodies touched the bed , his stupid phone started sounding an alarm , and he jumped out of bed .

“Aaaarh! this stupid phone !” He cussed as he stood up from bed . It was already five thirty A.M , went to ease himself , in his toilet a knock on the door , made him fastened his time at the toilet . He knew who it was at the door .

“Uncle good morning sir , I’ll join you downstairs soon .” He said , Mr Agada had a big bible ready for morning devotion . His wife Ada led the chorus session, it was just the four of them are home , their older children had all returned to school.

they sang praises and worship while Ogwuche dozed , he had stayed online too long with Dooshima , he kept yawning and dozing till the end of the devotion.

Dooshima couldn’t rest well , she couldn’t tell what the feeling was that was groaning in her soul , she kept seeing his face whenever she closed her eyes , an experience she had never had in her life , she tried to wish away the thoughts of the strange stalker that kept staring at her in the church.

“Mimidoo I think I should give him a chance , he is never going to give up.” Dooshima grumbled over the phone. “See ehn I get this kind of joy, that I’ve never experience whenever I see him , I can’t keep fighting it for long ,I think I’m falling for him.” Dooshima lamented .

“Let me tell you the truth Dooshima, it’s better you give Luper or Joshua a chance , instead of him , that guy is Idoma if you don’t know them , I grew up in Otukpo .” Mimidoo lamented.

“They only want to date us , and sleep with us when it’s time for marriage , all they do is go back to Idoma land , you yourself said he’s a player what do you want with him ?” Mimidoo said exasperated at her friends naivety. “Are they no Tiv boys you can pick from ? you’re yet to finish school , one year in law school , another year for NYSC, just avoid that boy , he’s bad news for you .” She said blankly.

“Come on Mimidoo how can you be talking like an old school lady ? this is the twenty first century, does tribe matter in love ?” She grunted .

“Well tribe does matter , in Nigeria and in the world , try to marry amongst your own people, so if you have misunderstanding, the both families would easily understand the culture. And amicably settle the misunderstanding, but when you marry a foreigner…” Dooshima wouldn’t let her continue.

“I am not a tribal bigot , I believe in diversity of humans and their peculiarities, I’m not saying that I am already in love with this boy , I just want to tell you as my best friend that he’s somebody who makes my heart beat .” Dooshima confessed .

“What makes your heart beat ?” Mimidoo asked , with a surprised tune .
“Yes , let’s not judge people because of their tribes , we should love people because of what they stand for .” Dooshima tutored her friend.

“But he’s not a believer? he’s a playboy ?” She said quoting Dooshima’s earlier confession. “A philanderer, would your parents approve of such relationship?” Mimidoo asked .

“When we get to the red sea we would know how to cross it , be happy for me . I want to experience love too , will my husband fall from the sky ?” She asked her friend .

“Not this one , an Idoma boy? he’ll use you and dump you , they don’t see anything good in us .” Dooshima cut off the call , she had stereotyping, and lumping a whole tribe into a small discriminatory opinion .

At the church Dooshima was early to church ,arranging the chairs with the ushers , she almost froze where to her right , she saw the young man who had been haunting her dreams , he was also helping the ushers to dust the sits , she couldn’t help the smile that crossed her lips . When his face met hers , he smiled , he began to walk towards Dooshima, Mimidoo appeared and stepped in between them .

“I don’t know your mission Dr Ogwuche! but I must warn you stay my bestie! I’ll fight you in church! I’ll fight you in the office if you ever get close to her!” Mimidoo growled and dragged Dooshima along .

“Hey Mimi this isn’t Odeh! he hurt you and cheated on you! Ogwuche isn’t him ,and that doesn’t mean all Idoma men are players and cheaters!” Dooshima hissed and pulled away from her grasp .”

Please allow me to try, to find my own happiness, allow me to make my own mistakes , my parents would police you will police me ! what do you guys want me to learn at twenty three years I’ve never had a boyfriend. I like him . It’s my life .” She stormed away from her friend into the choir room . Mimidoo followed her , their faces were rainstorms , even a blind man could see the anger sitting on their faces .

The Best friends didn’t talk to each other for the rest of the of the service , Mimidoo changed her seat and moved very far away from Dooshima as though she had the plague or ebola . Dooshima noticed Ogwuche’s eyes never left her face for a second until the end of the service .
