“Dooshima your hair is looking so rough, why are you not taking care of yourself? ” Mama Amos asked Dooshima caressing her unkempt hair.” You don’t want this young men to be looking at you? ” Mama Amos asked chuckling.

“Aaaarh mama which men? ” Dooshima asked looking at her face. “I don’t want any man in my life oh, I like my life like this just me and my daughter.” Dooshima said, while washing the bush meat mama Amos had brought from her kitchen. They were making the Egusi soup together.

“Come and put the meat Dooshima, you have not cut the pumpkin leaf.” She said. she got the spoon and steered the soup, she poured a little quantity on her hand and licked it.
“Maggi hasn’t catch this soup Dooshima add more maggi.” she did as she was told.

“What’s the problem with having a man in your life Dooshima? you came here with your daughter so small this. ” She bent her fingers to show the small size Shania was.

But now see her she’s the one running around kids, she’s almost a year and a half Dooshima you need to move on from your past.” Mama Amos said. “I see all the young men staring at you , but you never pay them attention won’t you get married so you can have somebody to help you? ” She asked.

“Mama which man is ever going to marry me with my child? I am okay being a single mother, but I don’t want to repeat the mistake that landed me in this situation in the first place.” Dooshima said.

“See Godwin and what’s that Amos friend? Terdue ! that one that has a white car. they’re good boys, they like you. You can pick one from the two .” Mama Amos said.

“Uhhmmm mama I am not thinking of love again, the last time was terrible I would prefer to have my sanity.” Dooshima insisted.

“Well I’ll make your hair. So you can look like a beautiful girl that you are.” The older woman said.

“Okay if you say so mama.” Dooshima said .

“Dooshima now is the time to add your vegetable. ” She said, Dooshima got her pumpkin leaves mama Amos had helped her room slice and poured it Into the fire.

She loved the aroma of the food. The kitchen was built detached from the main house, though the building itself was one of the most beautiful in Lessel, Mama Amos was still using firewood to cook.

The food was ready in an hour time, mama told Dooshima to dish for everyone, Grandma had lots of grandchildren they’d not gone to school, they all returned to the kitchen to carry their plate one by one half of the soup was gone in one sitting.

Dooshima and mama Amos ate together in one plate, she fed Shania as she ate, the baby was almost one year and five months old, she was just as intelligent as her mother, even though she had not started school she could read the English alphabet from begining to the end.

Dooshima gathered the plates and washed them. “Come and sit down let me fix your hair.” She ordered Dooshima, she had a smirk on her face, it had been long she felt that kind of love. It made her remember her relationship with her mum before Ogwuche came in.

“Aaah mama be gentle you want cut my neck.” Dooshima cried when her hair was combed too hard. “I don’t even know why I am making the hair self.” Dooshima cried.

“I want you to have a suitor oh, you cannot become a reverend sister in my house.” Mama Amos said. The old woman began to braid Dooshima’s hair, when she looked at herself in the mirror, she couldn’t believe her eyes, the beauty that had left her for close to two years reappeared.

“Can’t you see how beautiful you are?” Mama Amos said.
“Mama where did you learn to make hair like this?” Dooshima asked.

“Well my husband was in the army for thirty five years, we kept moving from one barrack to another all across Nigeria, I learnt to plait from my friend in Kano her name is Hadiza, I opened a saloon in the Mammy market. It was big then.” Dooshima kept looking at herself in the mirror. Shania walked to her mother and the Amos mother.

“Mammy you’re looking beautiful.” the little girl said giggling innocently. “Mammy you’ll make my hair too.” The girl said, Dooshima and the grandma laughed.

“Haaa Dooshima this your child has a very sharp mouth!” The grandma said. “I believe she carries after you, see big big words leaving her mouth? ” she laughed the little girl had ran to welcome Prisca and Priscilla who had just returned from night work. With a new friend.

“Good afternoon mama.” The twin greeted, they had a third friend with them, mama Amos feigned being deaf, she wouldn’t reply them.

“Mama they’re greeting you?” Dooshima informed her.
“Dooshima am not deaf!” She said with a stern voice and continued with her hair braiding.

“Abeg leave her joor is she feeding us? ” Priscilla asked. “Abeg let us go inside joor is she feeding us? ” She said with a haughty tone, before getting into her room.

“Mama why did you behave that way? ” Dooshima asked the old woman as she sat behind her.

“Those girls are annoying to me. They’re the kind of girls that bring shame to Tiv people. They cannot find a work to help themselves, everyday different men coming to pick them up.

If not for my son in Abuja who didn’t allow me kick them out, I would have refunded them their rent and kick them out of my house.” she said. “Dooshima sit well sit well see Terdue is coming.” Mama was acting like a teenage.

“Nooo! Mama why? ” Dooshima asked. While the car branched into the compound. It was tinted white Mercedes Benz Formatic. Dooshima refused to make any adjustment she didn’t want any man in her life.

The car stopped a few feet from Dooshima and mama Amos, Amos was the one driving, Terdue was sitting on the front passenger sit, while Godwin sat to the back, the loud music from the car was vibrating the zinc. The three young men came out.

“Mama good afternoon.” Terdue greeted his eyes not leaving Dooshima’s face, she was so uncomfortable the young man noticed it and went into the sitting room with Amos to visit the mountain of Eba that was waiting for them.
