CHAPTER 18

Dooshima spent the whole night crying, she couldn’t phantom her level of stupidity, she wondered what had pushed her so far to take alcohol. Shame bathed her from head to toes. Ogwuche had called severally that night, she refused to take his call, she wondered if she would ever be able to face her parents.

She had missed over ten calls from Mimidoo the precious day, she had kept pumping her phone with endless calls, she wondered why Dooshima wasn’t taking her call.

“Please baby take my call, let’s us talk. I swear to God I didn’t planned for it to turn that way Dooshima, you know I love you with all of my fibre?” Ogwuche messaged her on WhatsApp, she would read his message and refuse to reply.

The evening of the next day, Mimidoo dropped into the Gamadi’s duplex.

“Hello Shiana how are you doing? ” She said the maid, who was gathering duvets and bedsheets she had dried on the line in the morning.

“Hey Nurse Mimi how are you doing? ” She said, smile covering her face. “You decided to visit us today? ” She asked still holding her blue basket containing the sheets she had removed from the line.

“My dear na work oh, the thing has been tying me down. Is mummy inside? ” She asked.

“Dooshima didn’t inform you? ” She asked , Mimidoo shook her head. “Mummy and Daddy travelled to America for a medical check up. ” She blurted.

“Oh maybe Dooshima forgot to tell me .” She gave a suitable excuse. Mimidoo knew her friendship with Dooshima suffered a set back, since when Dooshima started seeing Ogwuche. “Is Dooshima upstairs? ” Mimidoo asked.

Shiana nodded. “Yes she’s I don’t know why she locked herself up in her room. She has refused to eat anything, I don’t know if she missed Mummy.

“Shiana said, before a rethink. ” But she and mummy have not been in good terms… never mind Nurse, well go to her room maybe she would open to you.” She said before continuing with her chores.

Mimidoo opened the brown heavy bullet proof doors that led into the sitting room, Dooshima’s room was on the first floor, Mimidoo climbed the stairs that led to a corridor that led to the second parlour , which was covered with rich brown leather couches and a white room divider, where a fifty inch flat screen television was sitting .

She turned to her left to the corridor leading to Dooshima’s room . She stopped at the brown door and knocked lightly. Dooshima was in bed sulking her soul out, wondering how she was to face the shame that awaited her if her deeds came to light.

“Dooshima it’s me please come and open the door! ” Mimidoo barked. Dooshima remained in bed, her vagina hurt , she could barely move. She thought sex was sweet by the descriptions and fantasies she had been feed, the bleeding first then the pains. She opened the door and returned back to the bed and dumped herself.

“Lillian are you okay? ” Mimidoo asked her friend when she saw her mood, and her posture.

“I am fine Mimidoo, how was work today? ” Dooshima replied , as she closed her eyes in pains.

“Babe you’re not fine, what’s wrong with you? I called you more than ten times yesterday, over five times today you refused to take my calls? ” Mimidoo asked. “What’s up with you? why are you walking like somebody who fell from a six storey building? ” She asked. Dooshima remained mute.

“So why have you been ignoring my calls.”Mimidoo asks Dooshima sitting on her bed. ” I told you I wanted us to go out, I kept on calling you after work, you refused to take my calls.” Dooshima gurgled.

“I sorry Mini I wasn’t in town… ” She paused and groaned. “I went with Ogwuche to Makurdi .” Mimidoo’s chest burnt with anger.

“So you forgot about our time out because of Ogwuche? ” Mimidoo groaned.

“Am sorry Mimidoo. I drank alcohol. ” Mimidoo’s eyes spread wide open with fear.

“Why would you do that? He gave it to you? ” Mimidoo asked.

“No he was drinking a bottle of Smirnoff Ice, I asked to taste, I ended up drinking taking two cups Mimidoo I lost my senses. ” She said still lying on the bed, her head was knocking like a hammer hitting against the nail.

“Is it the Smirnoff ice that’s causing you to walk as if you are pregnant or were knocked by a motorcycle? ” she asked.

“Mimidoo I messed up.” Dooshima wept. “I’ve disappointed my father, I broke my promise, his heart is going to break when he hears what I’ve done. ” Dooshima cried.

“Wait wait wait! Dooshima don’t tell me you allowed him sleep with you? ” Mimidoo asked wishing her friend would prove her assumptions . But Dooshima couldn’t say a word, she was quiet as a dove. “Dooshima why? ” Mimidoo asked.

“I don’t know, I tried to fight it, I don’t know it’s the alcohol, or if I wanted it. My vagina hurts as hell, I was saying rubbish, I asked for it. ” Dooshima said crying. “Daddy warned me not to ever let that happen. ” Dooshima cried.

“What if I get pregnant mummy would be justified for stopping our relationship. ” She continued.

“But why would Ogwuche allow that happen? Did you not tell him that you didn’t know a man? ” Mimidoo asked.

“Don’t blame him, I wanted it, I was scared of doing it, the alcohol brought out the beast in me. And I never said anything to him about not knowing a man,because we agreed our relationship would be none sensual.” She said with a wet and swollen eyes. “Now I feel like dirt.”

“Well you just have to ask for God’s forgiveness, you don’t have to kill yourself. ” Mimidoo said. “For the pains and soreness you have to massage your vagina with hot water and take pain killers, he wasn’t gentle. ” Mimidoo said.

”Get up please go and take your bath and have something to eat, if your parents see like this , they’ll know that something is wrong. ” she said and probed Dooshima up.

Dooshima had a hot water bath and massaged her body, then went down stairs to take her dinner with Mimidoo before seeing her off.

Ogwuche was absent minded the whole day, for twenty four hours, he hadn’t been able to speak to Dooshima, he thought about going to her house, he feared what her parents would do if they should meet him at their home. He had thought she wanted, especially after the kiss. He regretted ever letting his lust take a hold on him.

He would kneel down before her to beg if it warrant that to get her forgiveness. He couldn’t live without her, he couldn’t function properly at work. He was among the first set of people in church during the evening service. Dooshima didn’t come to church, and Mimidoo who did refused to talk to him, he guessed she must have informed her of what happened. He blamed himself for deflowering her. He thought she would have at least tried it a few times.

He had removed the bed sheet after he dropped her off, and soaked it with Hypo bleach to get the blood stains out. He swore to make everything write.

Dooshima’s heart began to beat hard in her chest when her parents returned back from America, so felt like a leper, she often locked herself in her room to avoid their stares at her.

“Lillian what happened to you while we were gone? you’re looking very emaciated?” Mrs seember asked. Dooshima darted away with her eyes, she didn’t want her mother to see the guilt in her heart.

“Mummy am fine don’t worry about me. ” Dooshima said, as she left the dinning table and rushed up to her room.

“Why is she behaving so strange? ” Mrs Seember asked her husband, who continued eating his pounded yam and beneseed soup.

“Darling let her be, sometimes young ladies do have mood swings. I think that’s one of such moods.” Professor Gamadi said.

“I am seeing somebody quite different from the one we left before we travelled. You know it’s you she loves more.” Mrs Seember said to her husband. “Please call her and talk to her to know what’s troubling her.” Mrs Seember said.

“The car gift didn’t feel like something she’s been dying for you to get for her, for four days now she’s refused to follow Sam out to learn how to drive. ” Mrs Seember said. The professor had ordered a new Mercedes Benz salon car for Dooshima, Mrs Seember didn’t see the kind of happiness she had known her child to have.

“Dooshima I really want to understand you, you know I love you very much? ” He asked Dooshima sat with a guilty heart unable to look at her father. “What’s eating you up? you’re getting lean everyday. Talk to me, I am your father I’ll listen to you. ” Dooshima continued staring at her feet.

“Lillian? ” he called.

“I am fine Daddy,I am just feeling a bit sick.” She said.

“You and your mum will go to the clinic for check up, you have to be in your best shape . I spoke with my friend at Abuja law school, he said the admission list is out . You need to check it tonight and then go to the hospital for treatment tomorrow morning. ” He said.

“Daddy I don’t want to go to the hospital I am fine. ” Dooshima said her dad nodded.

“Okay no problem dear , just know you can talk to me about anything okay? ” He said and Dooshima nodded.

“So you’ll follow Sam to the field tomorrow so he’ll train you on how to drive, I want you to go with you car to school. I have spoken to a friend to get you a beautiful two bedroom Flat at Bwari near your school. she nodded.

” Thank you dad, my eyes are heavy I want one go and sleep. ” Dooshima said her eyes were already so heavy that she couldn’t carry them up.

For two weeks she had avoided Ogwuche’s calls and messages, when her anger at herself had ebbed down, She decided to call him back.

“Hello babe how are you doing? ” Ogwuche asked, his heart was in his mouth.
“I am fine. ” she replied with a straight forward answer.

“I am sorry baby for what I did, there’s no day I don’t regret it, I feel so stupid for letting that happen. ” He said with remorse. “Please forgive me babe am guilty. ” He begged.

“I don’t have anything to forgive me, you never did anything wrong to me, I should have taken alcohol. ” She said in the phone.
“I want to see you please baby, when can I see you? ” He pleaded.

“Why do you want to see me Ogwuche? ” She asked. “So we could finish unfinished business? ” The words slipped out of her. “I can’t be sure it wouldn’t happen again, so it’s best we don’t see. ” Dooshima said.

“Please Dooshima am sorry it was a mistake, I want us to see s, we have to take there are drugs you can take for prevention… ” He said.

“Prevention of what? Do you have an STI? ” She asked calmly.

“No na not that, please I’ll be outside your house by seven P.M please come and see me.” He begged.
“Okay I’ll come out to see you bye. ” she hung up the phone.

Her Mum was at the sitting room around six forty five when Dooshima wanted to leave the house, she focused her attention on her.

“Where are you going Dooshima it’s already late? ”
“Mum I want to check a friend outside the house. ” Dooshima said.

“I hope it’s not that boy again? ” She asked, Dooshima didn’t reply her mother, but walked out of the house. Ogwuche was inside the Black Land Cruiser, he opened the front passenger seat for Dooshima to get in. They sat in silence for over two minutes, fearing to see the fire that was burning in each other’s eyes.

“Dooshima am totally wrong, I was selfish, I didn’t mean for what happened to have happened. I just want you to know that life has been so difficult and sad for me this past two weeks. ” He said , his hands gripped the steering wheel hard, that the bones on his knuckles could be seen, under the car roof light. “I hadn’t slept with any one for over a year I met you, I tried to keep to my promise , but my stupid libido got the best of me, If you live me today , I don’t think I’ll survive it. ” He said at the point of crying. Dooshima was silently chewing the sleeve of her sweater.

“If we could go back I would repair everything I did that day. ” He confessed.

“It’s not as if you forcefully had your way. But I wanted you to be my strength when I was week. I don’t want to break my father’s heart, he actually liked you. I just pray this doesn’t end in pregnancy, I don’t know what would come off it. ” She said.

“Am sorry Dooshima it’s all my fault. I have had this preventive medication so you don’t fall pregnant since the day after we… “He couldn’t complete his statement. ” But I couldn’t see you, take one pill of this drug, let’s be positive , not every sex translates to pregnancy, you’ll be fine. ” He said to Dooshima, her heart was a little bit calmer.

“Just take the drugs take one pill hopefully it would help prevent a pregnancy that we both are not ready for right now. please forgive me. ” Be said, Dooshima sighed and then exhaled heavily.

“I checked the list, I’ve gotten admission to the Abuja law school, I’ll be leaving in three weeks time.” Ogwuche was so happy for her, they both embraced each other.

“I’ll miss you a lot, I hope you’ll be coming to Gboko for weekends? ” he asked.
“I’ll try my best, I’ve to go inside my mum is waiting . ” She got out of the car, with her arms intertwined as though she was freezing, she walked slowly into the compound.

Ogwuche didn’t move his car, he remained there in the dark side of the road, where the light on the fence of the professor’s house couldn’t reach to reminisce on how he messed up. He promised to be a better fiance to Dooshima, Never to let her down again.
