MY COMFORT ZONE : EPISODES 1 – 10
Princess Stories
Episode 6
Dave was working vigorously on his system in his office but was getting distracted often as memories of the misunderstanding he had had at home with his wife earlier kept flashing through his mind.
“But that was so harsh of you; you should’ve just kuku kept quiet if you know you aren’t going to be encouraging.”
“For God’s sake she’s trying her best to improve spiritually for the betterment of the family and all you do is to make her feel low about herself. That’s terrible of you!”
“If you can’t put in the work to be prayerful and draw closer to God, don’t discourage those who are trying to with the words of your mouth!”
All these words and more kept pricking David while at work as his conscience steadily judged him.
“I should’ve been a little less harsh with my words; she looked really hurt this morning.” He thought remorsefully as he recalled how gloomy she looked before they left for their different places of work that morning.
“What are you saying David? Better shine your eye o, because this is how you’d lose your wife in the long run. Before you know it now, she’d deny you her body all in the name of fasting. You’re already drifting apart emotionally.
Why? Because she seems to be more interested in church services than she is in you. You did a good job banning her from praying or attending evening programs.
Sunday services are enough to keep you spiritual o, before you lose your wife in the name of church and prayers.” Another voice spoke from within him.
While Dave kept battling with which voice to listen to, Belinda on the other hand was trying so hard to not let her emotions override her while at work.
She recalled their early morning misunderstanding vividly as it kept flashing through her mind.
“You’re not grandma Zipporah and never would be”
“God cannot answer your prayers as much as he answered hers while she was still alive, so stop trying already”
“God!” She whispered with her head bent over her desk.
“He even went ahead to stop me from attending evening services! But why is David doing this to me, why?” She mumbled with her head bent. Her thoughts were interrupted by her loud ringtone. She checked to know who was calling.
“Mtcheeww. Please just let me be.” She soliloquized and put her phone aside on seeing it was Dave calling.
A few hours later it was 4pm and everyone closed from work.
Belinda hurried down to go pick her daughter from school. When they got home, Dave was already around.
Belinda gave a cold greeting to her husband and headed for the kitchen to make dinner.
“Food is ready, and Gift is waiting.” Belinda announced and left the Master’s bedroom without waiting for his response.
“Where’s your mom?” Dave asked when he got to the dining and met only Gift on seat.
“She’s still in the kitchen.” She responded.
“Okay, go and call her then. Tell her we’re waiting for her to come so we can eat together.” Dave said and Gift obeyed, getting up immediately to get her mom.
“Mommy we’re waiting for you…” She announced as soon as she walked into the kitchen.
“Okay go dear, I’m right behind you.” She said and followed her daughter to the dining.
As they ate, there seemed to be an awkward silence between Dave and his wife that the little girl got to notice.
“Mummy how was work today?” Gift said, breaking the already deafening silence.
“It was fine love. How was school?”Belinda responded, forcing a smile to escape her lips. She tried her best not to give off any vibes that she was upset.
“It was fine. Mommy we have a new teacher.”
“Oh really?”
“Yes, her name is Aunty Rachel.”
“Oh that’s nice to hear. I hope she’s nice to you kids.”
“uhhmmm…yes she’s nice a little; but is talented in flo.ggin if you misbehave.” Gift said and Belinda chuckled.
“Well, I think I like that?”
“You like that she can flog?”
“Of course yes. She’d do well in disciplining you children so you don’t end up becoming spoilt bra.ts.” Belinda said as she sipped her glass of juice.
“But must flo.gging be a form of discipline? Scolding is enough.”
“My dear, sometimes it’s not enough. Plus I’m sure there are stubborn kids in your class and shouting at them would mean absolutely nothing to them.” Belinda said and Gift kept quiet for a while, trying to find stronger points to continue her little argument with her mom.
“Daddy you’re not saying anything.” Gift said on noticing had been silent all these while.
“Yes I’m listening dear.”
“Who do you support between the both of us? Me or mummy?” Gift asked.
“This child.” Belinda said with a roll of eyes.
“Gift we’re supposed to be eating and not talking or arguing okay? So please leave your father and let him enjoy his food.”
“No but I want him to talk. Remember table manners.”
“But mum we were just.”
“Gift eat and stop talking abeg.” Belinda said in a pissed manner. Gift obliged and ate her food quietly afterwards.
When they were done eating, Belinda asked her daughter to clear the table and get the plates washed, before leaving for the master’s bedroom.
After taking a quick shower, she laid on the bed really exhausted. Apart from the mental stress she experienced at work , her emotions were stressed too.
“How was your day?”She heard her husband ask but she didn’t respond.
“Linda…..babe I’m sorry about my outburst early this morning, it was uncalled for. I’m sorry.” He said with a soft voice. His conscience had pricked him so hard throughout the day he was left with no other option than to apologize so as to have peace of mind.
Although somehow he still had doubts if he could let her pray and attend services as she wanted, he knew the right thing to do at that moment was to apologize.
“Babe are you listening to me?” He asked after some moments of silence.
“David I don’t have the strength for talks, please. Today was too stressful all I can think of doing right now is to rest.” She said with her eyes closed and her right arm across her eyes. David exhaled heavily and let her be.
MY COMFORT ZONE : EPISODES 1 – 10
Rachel laid on her bed extremely tired. She had just gotten back from work and had something quickly before coming to bed.
She checked for time and it read 6pm.
“Hymn time.”She said and sighed. Her tired was tired.
“But God, what’s wrong? What is going on? I asked for a lucrative job Lord, this teaching job isn’t what I bargained for.” She asked silently.
“Is there really something you want to teach me from this or something you need me to learn before answering my prayers and giving me the kind of job I want?” She questioned further and let out a sigh.
She reached out for her hymn book and began to sing for about 15mins, the lyrics of the hymn expressing the way she presently felt.
It’s been three days since David had tried communicating with his wife but each time he does, she ends up shutting him out.
“Babe I’m so sorry for the way I talked the other day. Please I take my words back. I honestly do not like this silent treatment, it’s killing me. Let’s sort this out amicably like adults that we are please, instead of this silent treatment” Belinda read Dave’s text message while at her place of work.
“There’s nothing to sort out, plus I’m not giving you any silent treatment, there’s just nothing to talk about.” She replied
“Babe you know that’s a lie.” He replied and called her line but she refused to pick up.
“At least answer my calls please, let me just hear your voice.” Belinda read and concentrated on her work, ignoring her husband’s message completely.
“Oh God, what else does this man want again? Why is he so bent on frustrating my life?” She murmured angrily on seeing his persistent calls.
“David what is it? This is office hours for crying out loud! You shouldn’t be interfering unnecessarily.” Belinda said on picking his call when she couldn’t bear it anymore.
“A teacher from Gift’s school just called me now to inform me that our daughter has been hospitalized. She said they’ve been trying to all you but your line seems unreachable.” David announced in haste. At that moment, Belinda could literally feel her heart wanting to skip beats.
“Hospitalized how? I thought I….oh my God! I forgot to give her her drugs today as prescribed by the doctor….Oh my God how did I forget?” Belinda said over the phone, biting her lips in regrets.
“So what’s the way forward?” Her husband asked after keeping quiet for some time. Belinda checked her wristwatch.
“It’s 3:30pm. I can leave now to see her, since it’s just 30mins to office dismissal. Which hospital was she admitted to? Did they tell you?”
“It’s the school clinic.”
“Okay, I’m on my way.” Belinda said and rushed to pack some important documents into the drawer. When she ensured the drawers were locked and everything was safe, she gave her secretary the key and left the office in a hurry.
“Mommy…” Gift said softly with a smile on sighting her mom from the door.
“Oh my love I’m so sorry. I forgot to give you your prescribed drugs this morning before taking you to school. It completely skipped my mind dear. I’m sorry.” Belinda said as she caressed her daughter’s cheeks.
“Where’s daddy?”
“My dear daddy cannot come now, he’s busy at….” Belinda had replied but just before she could complete her sentence, the door creaked open and Dave walked in.
“Daddy!” Gift said with joy as soon as she sighted her father.
“How are you my little princess? Have they attended to you?” He asked and she nodded in affirmative. Dave turned to face Belinda who looked the other way.
“Have you called Grandma Zipporah daddy? Please call to tell her her favorite baby is sick and needs her prayers.” Gift said and there was a brief silence between the two parents.
Gift who was a smart child noticed this and decided to find out what the issue was. When she wasn’t making any headway with her questions, she decided to let the sleeping dog lie.
“Well, if you no longer want to call Grandma Zipporah again, then I think we should start holding vigil of our own.” She said to the utmost shock of her parents.
“Vi what?” Dave asked
“Vigil daddy. I mean midnight prayers. In church our teacher gave us an assignment to convince our parents to begin midnight prayers.
“Well my dear, I do not think that’s going to happen in my house.” Dave said
“And why can’t it happen? Are you saying we don’t need God in our live and present situations, or that you have enough power to heal your sick daughter?” Belinda retorted, obviously pissed at his attitude.
“Do you know what she’s asking us to do? To keep awake in the dead of the night to do what? Pray? After a long stressful day at work? You all need to understand that we are not Mama Zipporah and can never be. We’d all just waste our time praying because He won’t hear us.”
“How can you be so sure of that?”Belinda asked and Dave said nothing afterwards but left the ward for mother and daughter.
“Mummy, why is daddy so much against prayers?” Gift asked as soon as her father walked out of the ward.
“No dear, he’s not. Daddy has had a bad day today and so can’t think straight. Rest a little okay? You’d bring this up later.”</p>
