My Comfort Zone

Episode 5

“So today children, we’re going to learn the power of midnight prayers. What did I say?”

“The power of midnight prayers.” The kids chorused

“Good! Now last week we talked about the power of prayers generally which is activated and dangerously effective when practiced as frequently and consistently as possible.

So today, we’re going to be narrowing our focus down to an important aspect of prayer used by most great men of God in the Bible. Let’s begin with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Oya everybody turn to the book of Mark Chapter 1 verse 35.” The teacher said and waited for the kids to turn to the passage.

“Okay are we there now?” The teacher asked and there were choruses of yes and nos

“Okay let me read from here.” The teacher said and paused for a while.

“And in the morning , rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. Can we all see that in our Bibles?”

“Yes Ma.”

“Good. Now I want us all to take note of the sentence ‘rising up a great while before day’. Do you know what that means?”

“No Ma.”

“It means waking up before sunrise just to pray. Now this kind of prayer is very powerful because when praying at this time, there’s no one to disturb you, and nothing to distract you from your prayers.

And do you know? This kind of prayers are answered speedily because at this time of the day, there is a high rate of spiritual activities going on, without human or physical interference. “ The teacher explained as Gift paid rapt attention. Somewhere deep inside of her, something told her the preaching was for her.

“So now let me give you kids an assignment, will you do it?”

“Yes Ma.” They chorused

“Good because I’ll ask of the results next Sunday. Now I want you for the next one week to try and practice praying on a daily basis. Can you do that?”

“Yes Ma.”

“Good. I want you to get used to praying on a daily basis for at least ten minutes. When you are playing with your friends, try to take a break and go to a quiet plan and offer a word of prayer to God. If you do this consistently, something about you and your family would change for the better.” The teacher said and Gift resolved in her heart to do just that.

“Aunty but what about midnight prayers we just learnt about? Are we going to be practicing that too?” A boy asked.

“Yes about that, the assignment I had in mind to give you on that is to try mentioning it to your parents that you’d love to have a family vigil at midnight as often as possible, to improve the family altar you already have. I believe we all prayed together as a family before coming to church today, am I right?”

“Yes!!”

“Good. That means you have a family altar already, so midnight prayers would just strengthen it and make it more powerful and effective. So that would be all for now. Let’s close now before your parents come to take you home.”

The teacher said and with that she called prayer points which they prayed and later shared the grace.
As soon as they dismissed, Gift traced her father’s car parked in the church’s parking space.

“Daddy!” She called out and ran towards her father when she sighted him.

“How are you my dear?”

“I’m fine thank you Sir.”

“Okay, what did you learn in your church today?”

“To pray more often and to practice midnight prayers.”

“Wow okay. I hope you’re gonna practice that.” Her father asked as she nodded affirmatively

“Okay get into the car and let’s wait for your mom. She should be out anytime soon.” Daddy said and Gift obeyed as she hopped into her father’s car.

“Gift please get into the church and go get your mother. Tell her if I wait one more minute for her, she wouldn’t like my reactions o. Ah ah, what’s this?” Dave said in anger as Gift hurriedly alighted from her father’s car to fetch her mom.

MY COMFORT ZONE : EPISODES 1 – 10

Mrs. Belinda knelt in front of the church altar with her head bent

“God my husband is complaining about my decision to get serious with you. Is there something I’m not getting right, or am I doing things the wrong way? Please teach me the best way to serve you and have a close relationship with you.” She pleaded in prayers. She remained still at the altar until she felt a gentle tap on her shoulders.

“Mummy we’ve been waiting for you.” She heard her daughter say to her

“I’m coming.” She said and immediately picked up her bag and left with Gift.
On getting into the car and seeing the angry expression on her husband’s face, her heart sank in fear.
There was an awkward silence in the car throughout the ride home. While Dave was serving his wife with silent treatment, Gift kept staring at her parents and wondering if all was well with them.

“I’m so exhausted. Baby carry my bags into the room, let me stay here and rest small.” Belinda said as soon as they walked into the living room, handing her bags over to her daughter.

A few minutes later, Belinda was in the kitchen to prepare Sunday meal for her family. She had cooked stew the previous night and stored it in the freezer, so all she had to do was boil rice and serve her family.

“Food is ready dear, come to the dining so we can eat.” She informed Gift the moment she walked into her room.

“Thank God! I’m super famished.” She said and left her mother in the room.

“Baby food is ready. Come to the dining let’s eat, Gift is waiting for us.” Belinda said as soon as she walked into the Mater’s bedroom where her husband was.

“I’m not hungry.” He replied without a glance at her.

“You’re not hungry? But you didn’t have anything to eat before going to church this morning.” She said but there was no response.

“Babe, if not for me, at least for Gift’s sake let’s go to the dinning room and have lunch together.”

“Woman I said I’m not hungry, or didn’t you hear me?” Dave said with a raised tone. Belinda sighed heavily.

“I’m sorry. I was so carried away at the altar I didn’t know time had gone and that you were waiting for me.” She said with her head bent, playing with her fingers.

“You didn’t know what? Belinda I’ve told you, I’ve been sounding it in this house but it seems as if you’re beginning to take my words for granted these days….”

“Babe I said I’m sorry, this isn’t intentional in any way. I’m obviously not going about this the proper way, but I promise to be better.

Please just be patient with me on this please. I really want God to be at the centre of our lives….we have no one else, and no one on this earth genuinely cares well enough to mention us in prayers like Grandma Zipporah does.

Babe we need God in our lives and someone has to….” Belinda said but was interrupted by their daughter who had walked into their room without a knock.

“Mummy Daddy the food is getting cold.”

“I’m sorry dear. Oya let’s go, daddy is right behind you.” Dave said and left with his daughter.

“Oh God, is this how difficult it is starting something new?” She mumbled to herself before joining her family for lunch.

Gift got up late in the night feeling really pressed. She located the torchlight placed beside her and dragged herself to the toilet to get eased.

When she got back to bed, she flashed the torchlight towards the wall clock to check the time.

“2am…” She whispered tired and suddenly recalled the ‘assignment’ her teacher had given them in church.
She had no idea what prayers to pray or what prayer point to call, but then remembered a story she had read in the Bible sometime.

“Jesus son of David, have mercy on me!” She prayed earnestly. She kept saying this for about ten minutes before sleeping off.

MY COMFORT ZONE : EPISODES 1 – 10

David tossed around his bed until he was awake. He touched the bed but couldn’t feel his wife beside him.
He dragged himself up a bit to check if probably she was on the floor praying but she wasn’t there.

“Here we go again.” He said with a roll of eyes after finding her asleep in a kneeling position in the guest room.

“What are you doing sleeping here when you have a master’s bedroom? What exactly is wrong with you woman?” He asked while tapping her angrily.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t know when I slept off. I had wanted to come join you in bed after prayers.”

“Prayers again? Belinda this is getting out of hand.”

“How? I’m trying my best to do your wishes and not get into your way. That’s why I came here in the first place, so I wouldn’t disturb you with my prayers. But you’re still complaining? What would you have me do?”

“Stop!”

“Stop what?”

“Stop this, stop everything. You’re not grandma Zipporah and never would be. God cannot answer your prayers as much as he answered hers while she was still alive, so stop trying already.

It’s becoming awful trying to be someone you’re not for God’s sake.” He said really pissed and left angrily.

Belinda closed her eyes to prevent hot tears from streaming down her face but it seemed to have failed her as the tears found a way of escaping her tightly shut eyes.

“God, why is change so hard?” She asked as she sobbed quietly.

TBC
Wow okay, I feel like saying something really profound here but I don’t know how to but….

I know there are people who really thirst for spiritual maturity on this page, and some are actually zealous enough to put in the work required. I just want, through this story, to let you know that it’s not gonna be a piece of cake at all.

There would be oppositions that’d discourage you, you’d make mistakes or not get things right at first, your family members may even make fun of you…especially when you do something wrong, they’d say something like ‘yet you’re forming spirikoko for us’ you get?…but please don’t stop trying,

I tell you God is watching and when He sees your desire and determination to be close to Him, He’s send help to you and make things easier.

Prayerlessness is a comfort zone, you shouldn’t be surprised when you realize getting out can be really tough, neither should you get discouraged easily. When the going gets tough (like it is for Belinda), you sure should get going because you’re tougher.

Make I drop mic and pen here, so we can continue our story.</p>
