Princess Stories

Episode 2

Belinda laid still on her bed, not knowing what to do for the day. She had cried all through the night so her eyes were bulgy and she wasn’t in her best state mentally.

David had consoled her when she broke the news of her strange loss of job to him and promised to stand by her, begging her not to think too much about it.

“You’d get a better one by God’s grace.” He assured her.She sighed deeply.

“But how did all these happen? I lost the job I’ve invested years of intellect, punctuality and resources in just a day. Oh God!” She thought and tried so hard to hold back the tears.
Just then her phone rang, rescuing her from the pit of self-pity she was about leading herself into.

“Oh my God! Gift!” She said and jumped out from bed to rush to the bathroom.
Her daughter would be discharged today and the doctor had given her the time to come pick her up. She was running late already so she wore any available dress and sped off in her car.

“Mommy, when will I be able to speak with Grandma Zipporah?” Little Gift asked her mother who was busying with signing in a book the receptionist handed over to her.

“Soon my dear, soon.” Belinda said with a hopeless smile. Belinda’s phone beeped on their way to the car. It was a credit alert. She wondered what the money was for until she received a call from her husband.

“Hello babe, I just transferred some money to you now via POS. Please do well to transfer it to Esther for Mama’s burial.” David said as soon as his wife picked her call.

“Mama’s burial? Mummy did someone die?” Gift asked innocently, having overheard their conversation.

“Baby it’s not good to talk about death, I’ve told you that severally.” Belinda said, trying to shut her up.

“I know mom but who are we sending money to for burial. Is it my uncle or aunty that died?”

“God Forbid! Gift please enough of the negative discussion already. Your uncles and Aunties are alive, hale and hearty.” Belinda scolded as she regretted putting the phone on loudspeaker

“Then who died?”

“Gift!!” Belinda called out angrily and the little girl kept quiet.

“Here, want some?” Belinda asked sweetly with a cone of ice-cream in her hands.
She had stopped by her daughter’s favorite shop to get her things that’d probably make her forget about her present challenges, plus her questions concerning Grandma.

“How about this?” Belinda asked with gala in her hands after she had rejected the ice-cream.

“I don’t want anything mom, I just want to go home. I’m tired.” The 7-year old girl said and with that Belinda drove her home.

“Is my brother going to come back today?” She asked as she laid on her bed with her other holding her hands softly.“I don’t know dear.”

“But today is Friday. He should come home, at least to see me. This house is too big for me to stay in alone all by myself.” Gift said and her mom gave her a gentle stroke.

“Who said you’d alone? Mommy and Daddy would be home too.”

“Yes, but being the only child in the house is boring. I want someone to play with during the weekend.” Gift said with a pout as her mom gave a soft smile.

“Alright darling, I’ll call your dad now to pick him on his way home.” Gift smiled in response and closed her eyes to sleep.

As soon as Belinda ensured her daughter was asleep, she left for the kitchen to prepare something for her family. In about an hour time she heard the doorbell. Her husband and son were back.

“Welcome dear.” She said as she gave her husband a hug and her son a peck.

“Ray go check on your sister in her room, she asked after you.” Belinda said after they were done with lunch. Ray sprang up on his feet immediately and went after his sister.

“Gift…..” Ray called out as soon as he walked in but there was no response. He had wanted to call her name again but saw she was still sleeping so decided to come back later when she’d be awake.

Belinda laid with her eyes wide open late in the night. She couldn’t sleep. All she was thinking of was her life. How she lost her job in a couple of seconds for no just cause remained a mystery to her.

“God how could you let Ma Zipporah die when you knew problems were coming my way? My daughter is sick, and the nature of the sickness seems to be defying medical power; I just lost my job and I’m totally hopeless on getting another one. Why God, why? What kind of temptation is this? Do you hate me this much?” Belinda whispered as she wept sore.

“But Belinda what is it sef? What exactly is the problem? Is it your loss of job, health issues of your daughter or that the woman you depended for prayers is no more? Isn’t she a human being like you? If she can pray and get answers, you can too!

There’s nothing special about her- she was in her mother’s womb just like you, plus she doesn’t have two heads. Enough of your tears over nothing joor. Get up and pray!” She got up from her bed after giving herself a little pep talk. She parted her lips to pray but lost it. She didn’t know how to start her prayers.

“God, I know you’re not very familiar with this voice you’re hearing this night like you are with Ma Zipporah’s own, but please hear the cry of your distant daughter. Please give me my job back and I promise you I’d work out our relationship. Please Lord please, I need my job back.

I can’t afford to lose it now, please Lord. I promise I’d be closer to you once you do this for me…..in Jesus name I’ve prayed, Amen” She said in a prayer that lasted for merely seven minutes and went back to bed.

To an extent, she felt bad and ashamed of herself for not being able to pray for long, even if it was for 15mins.
She recalled herself and her husband going to pay Ma Zipporah a visit only for one of her kids to tell her they had to wait for sometime because she was praying.

The wait usually lasted for half and most times more, depending on when she had started before they arrived.

She shook her head at herself. She had depended so much on her fellow human being that she could barely pray for herself for long.

“God have mercy on me.” She whispered to herself before falling asleep.

MY COMFORT ZONE : EPISODES 1 – 10

It was a Monday morning and everyone was dressing up to leave the house to their different destinations.Belinda as a mother helped her kids get dressed for school. She made sure her daughter took her drugs as prescribed by the doctor.

As soon as everyone was ready to leave, David offered to drop Ray in school while Belinda would drive Gift to school herself. As soon as the school run was over, Belinda came home and made something for the family in advance.

“Okay, Full housewife day 1. Let’s see how today goes, afterall some of my fellow women out there don’t get to have a 9-5 job.” She soliloquized as she sat with her laptop to edit some videos.

She had always loved editing videos she makes with her family during festive seasons, and she usually does that in her spare time. After about half an hour, she got bored and wanted to do something else.

She had two options- check her mails, or switch on the TV to watch a movie. She chose the former as she was the kind of person that believed in delayed gratification, and in doing the hard and not-so-fun task first.

She checked her mails as she would in her place of work and found nothing new. She sighed sadly and left to watch the TV.

“This house is so boring!” Belinda said and felt like screaming into a pillow. Slowly, her mind drifted into worrying about her issues.

“God, please……as soon as you help me get my job back, I’ll work things out between us. I promise. Just help me. I’ve spent two working days at home already and I feel like I’m going ¢razy.

I’m so not used to staying home doing nothing, while everyone else dresses up and leaves the house. Everywhere is silent and I feel very idle.” Belinda prayed in her heart and sighed before taking up her Bible to read.

“I don’t even understand a thing I’m reading.” She said with a sigh and closed her Bible.

It was break time but Gift seemed not to be very excited about it like the rest of her classmates. Throughout the day she’s been unusually quiet and moody but no one noticed except for her friend Favour.

“Gift what is wrong with you?” Favour asked as she approached her friend during break period

“Nothing.”

“Nothing? That’s a lie. You didn’t answer any question today like you love to do, and you’re not even eating your food. What is it? Are you sick or something?” Favour asked as Gift just gave a nod.

“Oh…..What’s the nature of the sickness? Is it malaria?”

“No, it’s more serious than that. I don’t know the name the doctor called it, but I’m on drvgs.” She managed to respond.

“Oh…..sorry. Try eat then, so the drugs would work well.”

“I have no appetite.” Gift responded. Favour however persuaded her until she ate a little out of her food.Just before break was over, Gift went to the toilet to ease herself. Before getting back to class, she closed her eyes to pray.

“Dear Lord, I know you can hear me so I’m going to say this to you. Please, do whatever it has to take you to heal me….please. I’ve been struggling with this strange sickness for a while now.

I only feel better when Grandma Zipporah prays for me but now mummy doesn’t want to call her again. I’m in body pains everyday that sometimes I wish I wasn’t even born. Please Lord heal me.

Our Sunday School teacher told us you have the power to heal and that when Jesus was on earth, he healed so many people with different kind of illness.

Please use the healing power you have to heal me, I’m tired of being the sick girl God, I’m tired.” Gift said as tears streamed down her face.

“I miss Grandma.” She said aloud as she sobbed even more. She didn’t believe God would hear her prayers. It seemed too simple to make God make a move on her case.

“I don’t know how to pray.” She whimpered in tears. After sometime, she cleaned her eyes and went back to her class. Shortly after that, the bell was rung indicating break over.

“Are the kids asleep now?” David asked as soon as his wife walked into the room. She had gone to check up on them and ensure they were all covered up because it was the harmattan season.

“Yeah they are.” She responded and laid down facing the other way.

“Babe is something wrong?” Her concerned husband asked.

“Something like what?”

“I don’t know, you seem slightly moody….plus you’re acting like you don’t want to talk to me.”

“Oh….it’s not like that. I just want to be alone, that’s all.” She said casually.

“Really? That’s all? Babe something is bothering you. I can tell from your mood and attitude. Please let me in on it. Or is it about your job? I’ve told you, you don’t have to worry about it, everything will be alright.” Dave said in the sweetest way possible.

“Okay.” Belinda responded with a scoff.

“Babe….you know you can’t keep getting moody because of this. It’d affect the kids soon, and more still, it’d affect us.” Dave said further and there was no response.

“Babe, are you listening to me at all?” He asked and tried to shake her but she slapped his hands away.

“David please allow me. You have the heart and mind to be giving me all these pep talks because it’s not you it happened to. Just put yourself in my shoes and tell me if you’d be happy if you lost your job. Need I remind you that the salary I get fuels 50% of our cost of living?

In few weeks time the month would run out and there’d be bills to pay. I have my own personal needs I need money for, plus Gift’s treatment is beginning to drain our finances like we didn’t work for it.

Tell me babe, how am I supposed to be happy? How?” Belinda said flaring up, before covering herself with blanket to sleep.

David went mute for a while as he watched his wife fall asleep. He knew it wouldn’t be wise to continue the conversation; it was already heading to a destination he didn’t like. He’d just let her be and continue the conversation later.

“Goodnight.” He said to her and laid down back. He stared at her for a while and sighed before going to bed</p>
