My God must judge you Simon! I didn’t destroy any body’s own you cannot destroy my own!” She left him angrily with the edge of her wrappr she wiped tears from her eyes.
” Ogwuche is this what you’ll wear to the hospital? ” Ene asked her son. He was still wearing the sweat and mud stained clothes he had worn to farm.
” Mama let me go and change you people should wait for me.”He said as he rushed into the house and changed into a black trouser and navy blue polo shirt, the trouser that had once stayed on his waist while he had just arrived Ohimini was falling off his waist he had to get a rope to tie the trousers, when he got outside he met Igoche fighting with his aunt.

“Daddy I want foyo you! Daddy I want to foyo you!” The boy kept crying in babyish English, nothing they had done could calm the boy, he was glued to his dad leg. Even a pack of biscuit couldn’t salvage the situation.
“Let us go please am in pains!” Onyabehi cried, angry at her son. “Just take him inside!” she yelled at her sister in law, Ogbene lifted the little boy and dragged him into the main sitting room.
Ogar was dressed to go out, he threw his truck key to Ogwuche ” don’t go and damage my car on the road oh!
” He instructed Ogwuche. He picked up the key and handed it to his father, without a word before joining his mother and wife in the truck that had delivered his mother’s yam.
In fifteen minutes they were at General hospital, the matron rained insults on Ogwuche for not registering his wife for antenatal, and not buying things for her delivery, Ene had to run around to get the things she could from the pharmacy in town, and paid the rest in cash, she also paid for the hospital bill.

Ogwuche couldn’t defend himself from the aggressive nurses who descended on him without mercy, when they had taken Onyabehi into the labour room, Ogwuche was pacing about the corridor looking pitiable,
Ene couldn’t take her eyes off her son, who was couldn’t sit still, his polo shirt had torn apart under the armpit, the trousers had been stitched on the buttocks, he kept going up and down the corridor of the hospital. He couldn’t see the tear drops fall down from her eyes.
She couldn’t imagine how her well dressed son, who she had boasted with to the village women had become a shadow of himself, nobody would ever believe he had gone to the university, before one would talk about him being a medical doctor.
Onyabehi put to bed a baby girl after five hours long labour, it was after twelve A. M she had given birth to the baby, Ogwuche was so anxious to meet his daughter, he rushed after the baby had been cleaned.
He was handed his baby wrapped in the same shawl Igoche had used, he carried her and look into her eyes, she a replica of his wife. She was so beautiful, she had the spark Onyabehi had in her eyes.

He was overjoyed, he returned the baby to her mother, and return to meet his mother in the waiting area, she was coiled like a dog would on a cold night on the street. She had gone in to see the child briefly before she returned to the waiting room.
“Ogwuche how long are you going to remain like this?” She asked her so after they had sat an eternity in silence.
“Mama how do you mean?” He asked.
“Ogwuche is your life Okay the way you’re seeing it?” She asks with a teary eyes. Ogwuche sat quietly not knowing what to say.”
Aaaah my pride you’ve turned to the pain eating my heart how can my doctor become like this? Ogwuche don’t you have a belt? Why are you using rope to tie your trousers?”
She asked he just laughed.
“Mama don’t worry I’m fine, it’s just that I lost so weight and my clothes no longer fit.” He said.

“Ogwuche I don’t like how your life is going oh. Its looking to me like you’ve been bewitched son.” She said, she sneezeds and clean the mucus in her nose with the back of her hand.
“I think somebody charmed you, we’re going to see one prophetess in Idekpa I can’t bear this anymore.” she said Ogwuche didn’t say anything.
The next morning mother and child were discharged from hospital, Simon was there to see his grandchild. Ene had already cleared the bills.
They stopped at Idekpa on their way to Agadagba, at a provision shop, Simon bought two big tins of Peak Milk and Bournvita beverages, a pack of sugar and other things for Onyabehi.
They drove in silence until they arrived at the compound, the news had spread like wild fire, women in the compound, turned up in large number, celebrating the new born child and rubbing powder on their necks.

Ene went into her room, took her bath, and slept, she had not slept all through the night, she and Ogwuche talked till the five A. M the next morning. Ene woke up to meet a plate of red oil rice and vegetables with smoked fish that Ogbene had prepared.
She eat it in silence, she and Ogbene took bikes to Otukpo where they selected Okrika shirts and trousers for Ogwuche, with some ready made shirts and trousers with two pairs of shoes, and a palm slippers.
Ogwuche had borrowed money from his younger brother Ogbole to buy chicken to prepare pepper soup for his wife. Igoche was beyond himself with joy when he returned from school to meet a new member of his Family. He kept kissing baby Alice all over the face.
