Does Walgreens Accept EBT?


EBT food stamps are accepted as a method of payment in Walgreens stores. However, not all Walgreen stores accept EBT cards as a mode of payment.

Initially, Walgreen was a chain of pharmacies in Chicago America, it is essentially still a pharmacy, but it has further expanded to include sales of other merchandise including household and even groceries. Following their new goals to ensure that the US population is well-fed, they work with SNAP to provide EBT packages for low-income consumers.

The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) is a scheme set up by the US government to assist citizens in purchasing groceries. These benefits are paid into an EBT account (Electronic Benefits Transfer) and purchases can be made using EBT cards. Most grocery stores accept EBT and SNAP as payment methods for grocery shopping.

Does Walgreens Accept EBT?

Walgreens accepts EBT cards as a means of payment in most of its stores but you have to confirm if it’s an accepted means of payment in your chosen store. SNAP pays a certain amount of money into the EBT account of its beneficiaries and this money can be used for payment for grocery items using an EBT card. However, not all items can be purchased with an EBT card.

Most packaged grocery items like cereal, grain, pasta, and other non-perishable food items are eligible EBT food items. Some perishable food items like eggs, milk, cheese, and other dairy products can also be purchased using EBT cards. You might also be able to purchase meat with an EBT card. Other items that can be purchased at Walgreens using an EBT card are, snacks and nonalcoholic drinks, cooking oil, fruits, vegetables, etc. In some cases, an EBT card might be used by the homeless and elderly as payment for food in restaurants.

Items like vitamin and food supplements cannot be purchased with an EBT card because they do not have nutritional information. Also, cooked meals and snacks like burgers and fast food are not eligible items for an EBT card. Pet foods, alcohol and drugs, paper and other home appliances, and pieces of equipment cannot be paid for with an EBT card.

How to use an EBT Card for Purchases at Walgreens Stores 

While shopping at Walgreens endeavor to keep the products you wish to pay for with your EBT card separate from your other purchases. So you’ll have to confirm which items are SNAP-eligible and which items are not SNAP-eligible.

At the cash-out register, you separate the EBT-eligible items from the regular payment items and swipe your card for the payment you will be required to input your pin. Then you can proceed to pay for your other purchases with a regular payment method like a credit card or a debit card.

Can Items Bought with EBT cards at Walgreens be returned after Purchase?

Walgreens offers a 30 days refund policy for items purchased using EBT cards for refund and exchange. In other to be attended to you will be required to provide a valid means of identification. This could be your state ID, your Driver’s license, your military ID, etc. 

Can Someone Else use my EBT Card?

An EBT card can be used by anyone as long they have the card 4 digit pin. This is actually to help the elderly and physically disabled people have access to the benefits in times when they might need assistance with making payments for their purchases. It is best to keep your card pin private to prevent unauthorized people from gaining access to your benefits.

Can I Purchase Items Online using an EBT Card?

Walgreens has not yet enabled EBT cards as a mode of payment for online purchases. At the moment EBT cards can only be used physically for payment of items via in-store purchases.
