How does EBT work?

EBT, which stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer, is a form of payment for people under Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. SNAP is a federal government food assistance program for low-income earners.

SNAP participants shop at SNAP-authorized grocery or retail stores to buy food items. Once you take your EBT card to a grocery store, your EBT account is debited to reimburse the store for the groceries you purchased.

What you need to know about EBT

  • Your benefit amount is automatically deposited into your EBT account every month.
  • EBT is strictly for food items. You can’t sue it to purchase drugs, alcohol, or gas.
  • It works like regular prepaid debit cards.
  • EBT is accepted in all 50 states in the USA, even if you registered it in your state of residence.
  • The SNAP benefits in your account do not expire if they were not exhausted by month’s end. Instead, they are rolled over to the next month in addition to the current month’s benefit.
  • However, if your SNAP benefits remain untouched after nine months, they will be taken away from your account.
  • You can always take SNAP benefits from your account till it gets exhausted, even if you lose your eligibility.
