Kroger accepts EBT as payment across its stores. Being one of the most popular grocery stores in the US with over 2,500 outlets it’s a huge boost for the SNAP project. You can also use SNAP EBT to pay for Kroger pickup services, provided it has to do with eligible grocery items.

What can I Purchase with an EBT Card at Kroger?

First, you should be eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), then you should have received your Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Next, you want to only shop for food items in stores that participate in SNAP – Kroger is a great example. See the list of SNAP-eligible items.

There are guidelines set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that outline what’s purchasable with SNAP. It consists of most food and essential items like vegetables, meat, bread, cereals, seeds, and more; provided they’re basic food items.

The entire goal of the project is to help low-income citizens afford their grocery bills, so pretty much all the essentials will go through. While that’s the case, things like cosmetic products, alcohol, or hardware are not eligible to be paid for with an EBT card because they’re not considered essentials.

How to use EBT in Kroger Stores

At Kroger, you use EBT cards to check out the same way you’d use a regular debit card, the only difference is that you can only use it to cover SNAP-eligible items. For self-checkout stands, you only need to select EBT as the payment method. While that’s the case, you always want to separate items that SNAP doesn’t cover, then use another payment method.

How to use EBT for Kroger Pickup

Kroger allows their customers to use SNAP benefits to buy SNAP-eligible items online – this service is also extended to Kroger Pickup. Here’s a set-by-step guide to using your SNAP EBT card online for Kroger Pickup.

Step #1: Download the Kroger app

Download the Kroger mobile app or shop with the web version on Kroger.com. You want to make sure that whatever you’re shopping for is a SNAP-eligible item, in cases when some aren’t, you should have another payment option to complete the purchase.

Step #2: Choose the payment method

Now you need to select EBT as your payment method and the pickup time.

Step #3: Pick your order

This is the stage where you pick up your order. First, you want to make sure you go to the pickup station with your EBT card because your payment is charged for pickup. Typically, you’ll see a contact number on the pickup signs, dial it, and inform the store of your arrival. A representative will come out with your order to where you’re parked.

At Kroger, pickup fees are free for orders worth over $35. At the same time, customers who order items not worth $35 in total have to pay a $4.95 pickup fee.
