THE NIGHT WIFE CHAPTERS 21-30

CHAPTER 27

BY SOLOMON ADINYA

“Gamadi that was harsh! she’s our baby how can you be comfortable sleeping here, when Dooshima is out there in the rain! where we don’t know!” Seember cried tugging at her husband’s shirt. “Please Gamadi if you don’t want the pregnancy we can take her to Abuja and have it removed.”

The professor turned to face to his wife’s. “What did you say? You want me to partake in your sin? I am surprised at what extent you can go. you’ll actually do an abortion? ” He was so disappointed at his wife. “If Dooshima tries to take the life of that baby, she’ll not survive she would die with it. You said I should call off the police from that scoundrel I did that for you.

You asked me not to ask the commissioner of health to withdraw his employment I did. Dooshima won’t stay under my roof anymore. ” He growled and turned his face from his wife. She stood there silent for a long time staring at her husband. She rushed downstairs.

Her phone began to ring, Seember picked it up and checked the screen. It was Annabel calling from Makurdi. “Hello mum. ” She said, she could hear the tears muffled voice of her mother. “Have you been crying mum? ” Annabel asked .

“Am fine Annabel how are you doing? how’s your husband doing? ” Seember tried to change the topic of discussion.

“Mummy don’t change the topic, I saw it over the news. Many blogs and pages on Facebook have been carrying the news. How is daddy holding up? ” She asked.

“He’s not taking it well, he has thrown Dooshima out of the house. I’ve begged so much he refused to listen to me. I don’t even know where Dooshima is right now.” She said.

“Mum let me hang up and call Dad’s line right now.” Annabel said. She dialled her father’s number, he wasn’t taking her call, she kept calling over and over.

“Annabel how are you doing? ” The pastor asked with a grumpy voice.

“Daddy am not fine, daddy you know everything is not okay, how can I be doing dad? ” she said. “Mummy told me, you threw Dooshima out of the house. ” Annabel asked.

“Annabel please I cannot talk now.” He said.

“Daddy please you cannot chase Dooshima out of the house. You’ll expose her to the dangers on the street.” Annabel begged.

“I told you girls, I told taught you the word of God, I didn’t allow your mother to imprison you with over protective restrictions. Dooshima has broken something inside of me. It can never be fixed.” He said.

“Daddy please forgive her.” Annabel interceded on behalf of Dooshima. “Daddy you cannot throw away the child and the dirty water. ”

“Please I want to sleep, Dooshima will be fine. Greet your husband for me, I’ll see you when I get to Makurdi.” The pastor said. He lay in bed all night, his gaze was focused on the white POP cast ceiling.

At Ochodo it was twelve A. M,Peach black on a cloudy might , a single bright star still twinkled in the sky. The tall and huge man tiptoed out of the house barefooted, he had a small clay pot on his stretched arm .

His black caftan blended with the dark night, quietly he sauntered towards Agadagba. He walked for thirty minutes into the bush, he couldn’t see his arm holding the pot ahead of him, the tiny bright light of his torchlight phone lighted the path.

At last he was in the farm, he brought down the small weeding hoe that was hanging over his shoulders, with one hand he held the pot, with the other hand he began to dig a hole in the middle of the farm he dug a deep hole and dropped the pot.

“Ogbole! Ogbole! Ogbele! I warned you but you refused to listen!” He paused, the cricket were chirping the nocturnal creatures yelped and hollered on far away trees.

“You dared me? you’ll die. You shall not eat from the fruit of the seeds you planted. If you don’t die I am not a man! ” Inside the pot was blood mixed with herbs and eggs with kola nut. He poured sand on the pot and buried it .

He hurried out of the bush as lightening brightened the night sky, before he could walk halfway through the bush, the torrential rain pelted his skin. Each time the lightening stroke the flash brightened the trees and bushes, he saw as the branches of the big trees danced from North to south.

He got to the compound at one thirty A. M the whole compound was dead asleep, he had not locked the door leading to his parlor, she pulled his black caftan and trousers and hung it on the line outside, before sneaking into his house, his skin covered with little water droplets.

His wife Ene woke up from bed, still sleepy, the house was as dark as outside of his house. The electricity distribution company had taken the light, as soon as the windstorm had began.

“Where are you coming from by this time? ” Ene asked her husband she had heard the door creak as he gently threw it open . “Why are you walking about in the night when people are sleeping? ”

“Ene don’t question me this night oh, I am not under you. it’s you who is under me. ” He said with an angry voice. “How can I marry a woman and she would want to come and control me in my own house .” He said as he fetched a new pair of new boxers from his cabinet.

“Everytime you’ll be talking to me as if it is you who married me. That nonsense has to stop Ene! I’m warning you oh! if you ever try it again I’ll deal with you. ” He growled. Ene turned her face away from him and went back to sleep.

“Look at me here Ogwuche how could you? ” He snickered. “Was that why you started going to church? ” Ogwuche couldn’t look at his uncle’s house.

“I took you away from your father so you’ll not be anything like him. Since the age of ten! my sons how many ladies did they impregnate? ” He asked Ogwuche , he was dead silent unable to see look at his uncle’s face. “My pastor’s daughter? that man employed your cousins in his chambers the two of them!

That man was the one who saved my job when some people in the office tried to frame me up. That’s how I started going to his church, why would you go and repay him with evil? ” Mr Agada roared at his nephew.

“For three weeks now the rumours have been flying about you couldn’t come to me! You put her in a hotel? ” Ogwuche couldn’t look at his uncle’s face. “Give me the keys to my car! ” He stretched his arm.

“I trusted you! You told me you’ve changed from your evil ways of philandering! You have destroyed my relationship with my pastor . ” Ada was shining her teeth in a smirk. She had brought the rumours to the ears of her husband. She had heard the gossip in the bank where she was working .

“I won’t give you any allowance anymore. You’re now a big man, you can take care of yourself. Lillian has never known hardship in her life, she has never been hungry.

You’ll go and get a house, a comfortable house to rent and make sure she’s comfortable. Congratulations for becoming a husband and father. ” He hissed.
