CHAPTER 23

Dooshima’s mouth became bitter, she had no appetite for food, her stomach churned and rumbled as she sat on the dinning table facing the plate of Egusi and pounded yam Shania had made. She was worried wondering what her dad would do when he got to know about her pregnancy.

“Dooshima you have to eat, to have your strength. ” Seember said. “Don’t worry when your dad comes we’ll talk about it. You’ll go to school. ” She said. Dooshima doubted that her mother’s plea would make any difference. Dooshima was frozen on her seat. the Fufu she had cut from the plate, had become hard, she had no intention of putting it in her mouth.

She heard the sound of the giant gate being thrown open, the a loud bang as the metal bar hit the concrete wall. then the loud sound of her father’s car being parked under the carpet, the car door made a loud sound “kpook.” she body trembled,she knew that was her trouble had just come home.

The creaking sound of the heavy bullet proof door, announced the arrival of the pastor, he saw the crestfallen looks on his daughter’s face, he thought it was as a result of her illness. Seember embraced him and kissed him on the lips.

“Darling how are you doing? ” He said holding her close to him.

“I am fine babe how are the kids? ” She asked staring into his eyes.

“Well they’re good, those children saw so much trauma yesterday. Imagine watching their parents and siblings get killed right before them. ” She shook his head in disbelief.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with Nigeria, one would be going about their lawful business and then some bandits criminals would come there and end their lives he said.” As he removed the brown jacket he was wearing and handed it to Seember.

“I had to give their aunties two million naira to pay for their upkeep and medical bills. Their father was a pivotal figure , who had contributed so much for the growth of the church.” Seember missed her husband again.

“Honey God will bless you for your labour of love.” She said still clinged to him. “we made your favourite food let’s go upstairs,so you can take your bath and come and eat. ” Seember said trying to lead her away. He stared at Dooshima who seemed lost I’m her thought.

“What’s wrong with her? ” He asked. “She looks lost. what did the doctor say is wrong with her? ” he asked.

“Well there’s something I need to show you, but it’s best that you take your bath first .” Mrs Seember said.

“No I don’t want to sit down please give it to me! ” He barked loosing his patience.

“Let me get it” She said . she began to climb the stairs to drop her husband’s jacket and get the envelope containing the test result. She returned with the result. Dooshima’s face was almost buried in plate of food, tears from her eyes soaked the plate .

Mrs Seember returned with the envelope, Pastor Gamadi took it from her, and tore the envelope, when he saw the test result, he began to sweat out of all his pores. “Seember what’s this that am seeing before my eyes? ” He asked.

“Darling it’s what it is. Dooshima has gotten herself pregnant. ” She said, tears fell from the pastor’s eyes.

“Dooshima come here! ” he yelled as he got up on his feet, he was trembling with anger. Dooshima jumped from the table and stood far away from her dad, he walked towards her. “Explain this rubbish Dooshima? how can you do this to me? Dooshima were you lacking? ” He sobbed.

“Darling! Darling! ” Seember rushed to wedge her husband so he won’t fall to the floor, he was collapsing to the ground. She helped him to sit on the couch.

“Take it easy Gamadi do you want to kill yourself because Dooshima decided to mess herself up? ” She asked, as the pastor sat heart panting he kept staring at Dooshima dazed.

“Who is irresponsible for the child in your womb Dooshima? ” He asked with a teary eye. Dooshima arms were crossed over on her thighs, she couldn’t stand the rage in. her father’s eyes or the guilt in her heart. “Are you deaf! answer me, who got you pregnant? ” Dooshima kept on crying and shivering.

“Oh now you lost your gut to speak? is it the doctor? ” He asked, Dooshima couldn’t say a word. “Is he the one? ” The professor repeated.

“Yes Darling he’s the one. We saw him in the hospital.” Mrs Seember responded.

“He’s not fit to be a doctor! I’ll make sure he gets fired from that hospital! I warned him not to ruin my daughter! ” He said , he wiped tears from his eyes, he began to search through his contacts, for the number of the commissioner of police, he found the number and dialed it. They was strong tension in the air. Dooshima waited for her verdict.

“Hello Professor good evening sir. ” The commissioner of police greeted the professor.

“Good evening CP, please I need you to send police men from Gboko division to my house. I need to make an arrest.” The professor said calmly.

“Okay sir I’ll call the DPO of Gboko division to send men to your residence right now. ” He said, the pastor hung up the call.

“I am going to make sure he doesn’t get employed in any government hospital. how could he? I thought he was responsible. You gave yourself stupidly to him. Forget about the law school, you’ll never go there to bring shame to my name. “He said, as he continued scrolling through his contact.

” So people would say the daughter of Gamadi a preacher of holiness got impregnated at home? You have destroyed my reputation in Gboko but you won’t all around Nigeria.” He kept dialing the number of the VIce chancellor of law school Abuja.

“Hello Professor Chibundu. this is Professor Gamadi on the line. ” The pastor said, the VC was so happy to hear the voice of his old college.

“Am fine Professor Gamadi how are you doing? ” The vice chancellor asked, with deep husky bass voice.

“I am good, I called to request a favor from you my old friend.” He said, the VC chuckled.

“What is it that you want from me Prof? ” He asked.
